About Cyprus Lifestyle and Culture
Cyprus is one of the healthiest places in the world to live. The Cypriot lifestyle reflects itself in the islands main diet, with the island producing a large variety of fresh fruit, vegetables, as well as free-range meat. The climate is excellent with the Mediterranean sun shining for an average of 340 days annually. The islands landscape is a diverse mixture, ranging from the golden sandy beaches, to the green forest of the mountains and the picturesque villages. There is also a very low crime rate in comparison with other European countries.
Food & Drink
Cyprus has 2 main industries: tourism and farming, both of which depend on the sun. Cyprus produces many fruits, vegetables and free range meat which ensure a healthy and delicious diet. Whether it’s enjoying traditional ‘moussaka’, sharing a ‘meze’ or a simple Greek salad topped with plenty of feta cheese; the mixture of local ingredients, fresh herbs and spices and olive oil represent what Mediterranean food at its best is all about.
Adding to the social ness of dining in Cyprus, wine made from the local vine yards that cover around 10% of the island, simply adds to the finishing touches to a lovely meal. Cyprus traditional wine making goes back thousands of years and is probably one of the most underrated wines in the world.
Although Greek is the main language on the island, over 90% of the population speak English, and it is spoken in all the Government buildings too. It is also found on road signs in all the major towns and villages.
Cultural events take place all year round on the island, including many church festivals in-between. These include the Kataklysmos in Larnaca , which represents the festival of the flood and takes place in June, and the Wine festival in Limassol, where visitors can sample the best of Cyprus wines and enjoy folk performances in September.
There are also various concerts, dance and music recitals that take place throughout the year with performers from all over the world. Past visitors have included Elton John, 50cent, Akon, Queen, Bryan Adams, Swan Lake and Riverdance to name a few.
Cyprus is one of the few places on the planet, where you can ski and swim in the sea on the same day without travelling hundreds of miles. In fact, geographically, the only other places this is convenient are Lebanon and Iran.
