About Cyprus History
Cyprus is home to a number of archaeological sites and monuments to visit and explore; which provide a unique understanding into the islands past.
St Paul performed a number of miracles during his first visit to the island and Richard the Lion heart married Princess Berengaria in what is now known as Limassol.
Also according to legend, Aphrodite the Goddess of Love was born near Paphos. The site, now known as ‘Petra tou Romiou’ was famously depicted by the artist Botticelli in his painting ‘The birth of Venus’.
Cyprus has one of the oldest civilizations of the Mediterranean that goes back 10,000 years, following a long history of numerous occupants. The island is a mosaic of different cultures and periods. From the Roman amphitheater, to the underground tombs of the kings, the island is rich in history and historic land marks.
It was the first country the apostles Paul and Barnabas visited in their mission to spread the word of Christianity and the first to come under the Christian administration.
